2013 WOC Conference
ADVANCE is a National Science Foundation program designed to develop systemic approaches to increase the representation and advancement of women in academic science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers, thereby contributing to the development of a more diverse science and engineering workforce. ADVANCE-Purdue is an institutional transformation project that targets recruitment, retention, and advancement of women STEM faculty at Purdue University. The mission of ADVANCE-Purdue is to conduct research and evaluate Purdue Center for Faculty Success (PCFS) programming, structure and institutionalization, and to institutionalize PCFS as a vibrant center integrated into the fabric of Purdue.
A key component of ADVANCE Purdue is the hosting of the Women of Color Faculty in STEM Conference. This year’s conference theme “HEAR OUR HEELS: Succeeding in Academia to Tenure and Beyond” will provide a forum for Women of Color faculty in STEM from various institutions to develop individual and collective strategies for institutional transformation and to enhance their experiences and success in the academy.
Conference participants will have an opportunity to engage with other Women of Color faculty in STEM from various institutions. Conference workshops will provide a personalized experience with the following outcomes: (1) the creation of professional development plans; (2) the development of formal mentoring networks; (3) identifying success strategies to address professional and personal obstacles; and (4) to identify and develop research collaborators and networks.
To enhance the experience of participants in the 2013 Women of Color Faculty in STEM Conference, usage of the WOC STEM HUB will be fully integrated in the professional development activities.
