Become an SI Leader

Qualifications for SI Leaders

In order to become an SI leader, a student must:

  • Be an undergraduate Purdue student
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher OR
  • Have a 3.3 term GPA for the previous two semesters (does not include summer terms)  and
  • Meet course requirements (typically an A or B+ in the course; may also include prerequisite course(s))
  • Be able to commit to working 10-15 hours per week in this position
  • Be able to attend the two-day pre-semester training (typically the weekend before classes start)
  • Provide 2 professional references in the application. At least one reference must be affiliated with Purdue University (Faculty, Staff, Teaching Assistant, etc). Please note - we will not accept current SI leaders as references. 
  • Complete all steps of the application process (see below)
  • Attend one of the following:
    • One of the three Interest Sessions  or
    • Three or more SI sessions during the three semesters preceding the semester they wish to lead for (ex: Fall 2022-Fall 2023 to lead for Spring 2024)
  • Please note - we prefer to hire SI leaders with at least 2 full semesters at Purdue. Applicants who do not have a GPA are still welcome to complete the application, but please be aware that offers are contingent upon a grade check at the end of the semester.

Responsibilities of an SI Leader

  • Attend all lectures for assigned SI course
  • Plan and facilitate two or three 50-minute sessions a week
  • Hold one office hour a week
  • Meet with course faculty throughout the semester
  • Meet with SI Leader team and professional staff supervisor throughout the semester
  • Attend all SI monthly meetings
  • Additional documentation, administrative tasks, and professional development opportunities

Hours and Compensation 

Typically, we expect our SI Leaders to work between 10-15 hours per week throughout a semester. As an SI Leader, you can expect to have your pay start at $13.25 per hour.

STEP 3: Complete an online application

STEP 4: Participate in Group Interviews, by invitation only 

STEP 5: Participate in an Individual Interview, by invitation only

Interest Sessions

Interested in becoming an SI leader, and want to learn more? Please attend one of our interest sessions! These one-hour in-person sessions allow candidates to get a more thorough understanding of the role of SI Leader, including an opportunity to ask questions of current SI Leaders, in order to determine if the position is a good fit for them before they apply.
