The Eitlejorg Museum will host their Día de Muertos Community Celebration on Saturday, October 21, 2023, for FREE. While you're there, check out the Latino Cultural Center's altar.

Experience Día de Muertos/Day of the Dead at the Eiteljorg with partner, Arte Mexicano en Indiana and Nopal Cultural. Learn the history behind the holiday, watch performances, meet artists and watch demonstrations, explore artwork, support local artists and create art. Along with our Community Alter exhibition, we will also have a special exhibition related to Día de Muertos titled Fernando Lozano: We Remember. This exhibition honors those who have lost their lives to COVID-19 following the traditions of Día de Muertos. You will not want to miss this year’s celebration!

Dia de los Muertos at Purdue

Each year the Purdue University Latino Cultural Center gathers to call upon our ancestors who have passed, and to celebrate their life and death. In 2008, UNESCO recognized the importance of Día de los muertos by adding the holiday to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Day of the Dead originated several thousand years ago with the Aztec, Toltec, and other Nahua people. For these pre-Hispanic cultures, death was a natural phase in life’s long continuum. The dead were still members of the community, kept alive in memory and spirit—and during Día de los Muertos, they temporarily returned to Earth.

The evening will also feature crafts, live performances, and traditional food enjoyed on Dia de los muertos.

Hasta la muerte: A Day of the Dead Show

Friday, November 3 | 8PM | Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center, 128 Memorial Dr., West Lafayette, IN 47906

The pageantry, emotion, and captivating music of the Mexican celebration of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) will fill the Loeb Playhouse stage when Las Cafeteras brings its Hasta La Muerte show to Purdue.

The East Los Angeles band is versatile in sound and in performance, as it fuses Afro-Mexican, Son Jarocho, Americana, and soul with hip-hop and spoken into the unique sound that had NPR raving, “Creative, socially conscious it’s perfect.”

For Hasta La Muerte, Las Cafeteras presents its most theatrical show yet, with choreography, elaborate costumes and the familiar stylized skull face paint. The two-act performance examines the stages of grief and loss through the celebration of life and death.

The Day of the Dead is a way to connect and remember relatives that have passed away. Watch below to learn how to build a family altar and how to celebrate our departed loved ones with Jessica Reis Mendivil.

Jessica Reis Mendivil has been a Death Doula for 4 years, She specializes in grief, loss and end of life guidance. She is a member of the International End of Life Doula Association, has expansions in Pregnancy & Infant loss, Pet Hospice, Somatic practice and Ecstatic dance. She believes that grief is sacred, getting old is a rite of passage and that death can be life affirming.
