Frequently Asked Questions

No membership is required to participate in LCC programming or to access resources. You simply need to walk in and sign-in at the front desk. All are welcome!

At the LCC, our mission guides our work. On a large scale, we support Latinx students via advocacy, programming that is nationally relevant and provide leadership and professional development opportunities. Our programming provides learning opportunities about Latinx cultures, histories, politics and identity for the campus community. Daily, we provide un hogar, a home away from home, for the campus community. Students use the building as a place to gather, learn and study. They seek support from staff whether it’s talking through a problem, sharing good news or asking to look at their resume. Staff hold meetings or have lunch at the center and faculty may hold their class or office hours here. We work with staff to provide trainings so that they can better support one another and students. We engage the community mostly through an educational lens making higher education accessible for Latinx communities.

Yes! Our mission includes Purdue faculty and staff. We organize writing groups, offer space for faculty/staff to hold office hours, make the conference room available for faculty/staff to hold classes and collaborate on programming. We also work closely with the Latino Faculty and Staff Association. The Director is currently working on a mentorship program for Latinx faculty (and staff). Purdue is an institutional member of the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity and faculty and graduate students can access their services here: https://www.facultydiversity.org/institutions/purdue.

We also want to work with faculty that assign class projects about the LCC or diversity, inclusion and equity. We can collaborate with you to help design assignments with learning outcomes and assessment tools. Contact the LCC director at colaru@purdue.edu for more information.

Absolutely! Our longstanding motto has been “All are welcome.” The LCC is for everyone!

Please do! You do not need to speak Spanish or Portuguese to participate in our events or to access the resources.

Yes! Most of the staff speaks Spanish or Portuguese and many of us speak a perfect Spanglish! If we have the ability to, we will use the language you feel most comfortable using!

Always. The staff is trained to understand the complex histories and identities that make up our diverse Latinx communities.

Being Latinx does not mean you look a certain way. Latinx folks are diverse because of our complex histories. Our staff is trained to not make assumptions about identity and to combat racial and ethnic stereotypes.

Students at the LCC are almost always studying or meeting with their student organizations and we prefer that they not be interrupted. However, you can contact us at latinocc@purdue.edu with a description of your project and a request to meet with one of the staff members of the LCC. Make sure to give us enough time to meet with you! We may not be able to accommodate next-day requests.

I have a study and need Latinx participants. May I come to a student organization event like the lunch series to make an announcement?

The students organizing and dedicating time and money to the lunch series use this time as a way to outreach for their organization. We want them to make use of their time as best they can. Instead, you can post flyers at the LCC (check-in at the front desk).
