Manager Resources
Recruitment
As a manager of student employees, there are situations in which students seek out positions on campus to make money or fill up their day, but recruitment and retention are also key aspects to working with students.
Employee Recruitment
There are a few messaging and recruitment strategies that attract students. Below are a few that tend to have the most success and examples on how to incorporate them in your recruiting efforts.
- Create messaging that's short, sweet, and to the point. You can do this by utilizing social media, news feeds on your department's website, and through digital signage. Use keywords that will stand out to students and be sure to include stimulating visuals. If your department has a newsletter, make sure to incorporate these features in there.
- Get students involved. Recruiting during new student fairs and job fairs are just two ways to continually recruit students. You can also hold information sessions throughout the year to meet with students and talk about opportunities. Have current student workers attend these events to talk about their experiences.
- Make applying easily accessible. All Purdue recruitment and onboarding activities take place in SuccessFactors.
- Authenticity: Sharing testimonials capitalizing on the benefits of student employment are also great ways to attract students.
- Credibility: Word of mouth is one of the best ways to share information about your open positions because it is relatable and authentic. You are also encouraged to partner with student organizations.
- Value: Your messaging should be stated in a way that provides a reason for students to take time to read your information. Include why students should apply to your position, such as the pay rate, skills the student will develop, a flexible work schedule, building relationships and making friends, etc.
Hiring in SuccessFactors
What is SuccessFactors?
All Purdue student hiring is done through the SuccessFactors platform. Simply put, SAP SuccessFactors is an integrated, cloud-based core human capital management solution. What this means is that the system’s integration allows information collected in one area to populate information in another area, creating a unified location for employee data through an employee’s life cycle, from new hire to retiree. Transition to SuccessFactors simplifies and streamlines major components of employee management including recruitment, onboarding, and timekeeping.

Training and Development for Student Employees
Supervisors should offer and encourage training and development opportunities that contribute to continuous growth and improvement. An example of this is teaching students who are in a supervisory role how they can become an effective leader. The Training and Development page under Employee Resources has a list of opportunities available across campus as well as some benefits training and development has for students. Supervisors are encouraged to talk to their student employees about participating in these and also discuss other opportunities and ways they can grow in their position.
