2022 Focus Award Recipient - Organization
S.H.I.N.E.
Students Helping Ignite Needed Esteem (“S.H.I.N.E.”) is a student organization at Purdue Northwest that is dedicated to finding creative ways to make campus a kinder and more positive place. SHINE members do this by organizing special kind projects and events.
This year, S.H.I.N.E. worked with the Disability Access Center (“D.A.C.”) at Purdue Northwest for an event entitled, “Your Day to Shine!” This event honored those with disabilities by offering students different colored ribbons that represented various disabilities. Students could grab a ribbon that represented their disability if they felt comfortable doing so. Various pamphlets were also handed out to support those with disabilities and raise awareness.
Not only does S.H.I.N.E. create opportunities to spread kindness and help students de-stress, S.H.I.N.E. also works to ensure that kindness reaches everyone. This year S.H.I.N.E. will publish a children’s book, Karis the Kitten and the Tail of Kindness, about a kitten named Karis who spreads kindness. Karis the Kitten and the Tail of Kindness will also be available as an audiobook to make this positive message even more accessible.
