Appointments to individuals who are not faculty, staff or postdocs tend to be included within the label of "scholar". Specifically, 'Scholars" might include

  • Visiting Scholars

    • A kind of Purdue appointment, namely, unpaid appointments at Purdue primarily to engage in their own research endeavors. Please see our discussion of Visiting Scholar Appointments for more information.

  • Visiting Faculty

    • A kind of Purdue appointment, namely,  short-term, temporary appointments at Purdue primarily for teaching purposes. These may be paid or unpaid. Please see our discussion of faculty appointments for more information. 

  • Short-Term Scholars

    • An immigration term, namely, a J-1 exchange visitor whose activities at Purdue will be for 6 months or less, primarily for purposes of research or teaching. Please see our main discussion of J-1 categories for more information about Short-Term Scholars.

  • Research Scholars

    • An immigration term, namely, a J-1 exchange visitor whose activities at Purdue may be for up to 5 years maximum, primarily for purposes of research or teaching. Please see our main discussion of J-1 categories for more information about Research Scholars.

  • Student Interns

    • An immigration term, namely, a J-1 exchange visitor whose activities at Purdue contribute to their degree program in their home country. Purdue regularly hosts 'Visiting UnderGraduate Students" (VUGS) who engage in mentored research activities at Purdue as part of their undergraduate degree programs abroad. 

  • Specialists
